Lifeguard Training (LGT)

Lifeguard Training teaches you the skills and knowledge necessary to respond to aquatic emergencies, including First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with a focus on being professional, proactive and prepared to respond.

Policies and Prerequisites

Candidates must be at least 15 years old before course completion and be able to pass a pre-course skills evaluation that requires you to:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously using either of the following strokes (10 minutes or less):

  • Front crawl using rhythmic breathing
  • Breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence

2. Tread Water for 2 minutes without stopping:

  • Only the legs can be used
  • Hands must be placed under the armpits or above the surface of the water
  • Head must be above the surface of the water

3. Brick Retrieval

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using freestyle or breaststroke
  • Surface dive 7 – 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object and return to the surface

  • Swim 20 yards back to your starting point with both hands on the object
  • Exit the water without using steps or a ladder
  • Complete the event within 1 minute and 40 seconds

Open Water Lifeguard Training (OWLGT) Module

(If participating in the additional OWLGT module the following additional prerequisites apply)

1. Swim 550 yard continuously using either of the following strokes (10 minutes or less):

  • Front crawl using rhythmic breathing
  • Breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence

2. Certified and cleared by a physician as follows:

  • Adaquate health and fitness to attend Open Water Lifeguard Training
  • Adaquate vision, hearing, physical ability, and stamina to perform required duties of an open water lifeguard 

3. Emergency First Responder (EFR) Certification:

  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR/AED for the professional rescuer
  • (both together totaling no less than 43.5 hours and approved by federal or state health department)

4. Scuba Certification

  • Open water certification or higher
  • Certification through a nationally recognized organization 

5. Stamina and Strength

  • Sucessfully complete pre-course requirements in open water
  • Demonstrate stramina and strength needed to preform open water lifeguard duties

Child Safety and First Aid

This program provides essential knowledge and skills to help prevent emergencies and provide care for children and infants.  Topics include:

  • The unique anatomy of a child/infant, as it relates to First Aid
  • Techniques to prevent an emergency situation
  • When to call for Emergency Care
  • Tips on how to control an unstable situation
  • Caring for Breathing Emergencies
  • Caring for a choking child/infant
  • How to provide child/infant CPR until help arrives
  • Basic First Aid techniques
  • General Questions and Answers with your instructor

CPR/AED for Professionals

This course is designed specifically for individuals working in environments where it is regulated to have CPR/AED certification. If you work in a fitness facility, daycare facility, or any other workplace where you are mandated to be certified, this is the certification for you. Completion time is approximately 4 hours. Group rates are available upon request.

(40% off) CPR/AED and First Aid for Professionals

This course is designed specifically for individuals working in environments where it is regulated to have CPR/AED certification. If you work in a fitness facility, daycare facility, or any other workplace where you are mandated to be certified, this is the certification for you. In addition, each student will be trained in communitiy first aid which will provide them with the tools need to appropriately bandage wounds, splint and binding, and recognizing signs and symptoms of a patron experiencing an emergency condition.  Completion time is approximately 5 hours. Group rates are available upon request.
